Project Censored

Peter and Mickey discuss the  2015 edition of Project Censored's annual book on stories unreported or under-reported by the corporate media. 

The guests are Andy Lee Roth, co-editor of "Censored 2015," and two contributors to the book, Dorothy Kidd and Zara Zimbardo. Roth summarizes 
some of the "top 25 censored stories," and their common themes. Kidd wrote about the growing resistance to giant mining companies in the Americas; Zimbardo examined the cultural meanings behind the popularity of zombies in U-S entertainment media. 

Co-hosts Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff spend the hour in conversation with media scholar Robert McChesney, 
discussing topics from political conditions in the U-S, post-capitalist democracy, and a plan for financing independent media. 
McChesney teaches at the University of Illinois; his latest book is "Blowing the Roof Off the Twenty-First Century."

Even as cell phones become almost ubiquitous, evidence is accumulating that their emissions can cause brain tumors and other maladies. 
Peter and Mickey speak about the health hazards of cell phones withKevin Kunze,  Lloyd Morgan, and Max Anderson.
Kevin Kunze is the producer of the new documentary  "Mobilize: A Film About Cell Phone Radiation. "
Lloyd Morgan is Senior Researcher with the Environmental Health Trust.
Max Anderson is a member of the Berkeley City Council, and is working on local legislation to require more prominent safety instructions on cell phones.

On the Project Censored Show for the week of December 5 on Pacifica Radio, Mickey Huff and Peter Phillips  discuss US Petro Dollar Hegemony and Global Imperialism. They interview Brazilian journalist Pepe Escobar about the price of oil and the real threat of war being pushed by US/NATO brinksmanship regarding Russia and China; in the second half of the program they are joined by independent journalist Mike Whitney (Counterpunch) and political analyst Eric Draitser (of Stop Imperialism) discussing the connection between the Ukraine, the sudden drop in oil prices, global imperialism and more. 

Co-hosts Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff devote the hour to a conversation with author Peter Dale Scott about his latest book,
"The American Deep State: Wall Street, Big Oil and the Attack on U.S. Democracy." This wide-ranging discussion 
examines the "deep state," an evolving level of secret government separate from the elected government. Scott looks at 
the origins of the deep state, its communications and finances, and its involvement in landmark events, from the JFK 
assassination to Watergate to September 11 and beyond. 

Peter Dale Scott is a former Canadian diplomat, professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and a

Co-hosts Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff  devote the program to the latest developments in the continuing Fukushima nuclear crisis,
the consequences for Japan and the world, and safety measures that individuals can take. Libbe HaLevy 
produces the online program "Nuclear Hotseat;" Kimberly Roberson is director of the Fukushima Fallout 
Awarenss Network. They ask how families can protect themselves from the dangers of radiation exposures.

This week's Project Censored show focuses on the growing Palestine solidarity movement 
on U.S. campuses. Nora Barrows Friedman discusses her new book "In Our Power," 
based on interviews with dozens of student activists around the U.S. And Ph.D. student Kumars Salehi 
speaks about his experiences in the Students-for-Justice-in-Palestine chapters at NYU and UC Berkeley.

On this weeks Project Censored Show on Pacifica Radio, Peter Phillips in studio with PC Affiliate Professor Nolan Higdon look at the continuing crisis in Ukraine and Syria. They start with a regional update by author and geopolitical analyst Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya with Global Research in Montreal. Then they look at the imperialism of the US/NATO involvement in Syria and Ukraine with Sara Flounders, author and co-director of the International Action Center in New York.  And they end the show with St Mary’s College economics Professor Jack Rasmus addressing neo-liberal economics in the Ukraine region and the US/EU sanctions on Russia.

On this weeks Project Censored Show on Pacifica Radio Mickey Huff and Peter Phillips honor the October 22nd National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, they look at Law Enforcement Related Deaths and the increasing concerns in the US about police violence. Joining them is October 22nd activist and legal advocate Karen Saari, who has researched the number of newspaper reported police shootings in the US. Diana Grant, professor of Criminal Justice at Sonoma State University, joins the program to address the question- why does the US government fail to accurately report law enforcement related deaths? In the second half of the program they speak with Censored 2015 editor professor Andy Roth, and  liberal studies professor Francisco Vazquez who is serving on the Sonoma County Community and Local Law Enforcement Task Force. They close with a brief update from filmmaker Dylan Avery on his new project Black and Blue that looks at the problem of police brutality. 

This episode takes a look at the history of the Free Thought movement in the U-S, from its roots in the time of independence 
to its resurgence during the post-Civil War years. The struggle between freethinkers and conservative religious forces played out 
on several fronts, including efforts to restrict what publications could be sent through the U-S mail. Among the historical figures 
examined in the program are the Free Thought publisher D.M. Bennett and the 'anti-vice crusader' and postal inspector Anthony Comstock, 
who lobbied for laws banning the mailing of 'obscene' materials. Bennett was sentenced to prison for mailing a pamphlet called "Cupid's Yokes."

The guests are Roderick Bradford, author and filmmaker, and Tom Flynn, editor of Free Inquiry magazine. 
The program includes excerpts from the documentary film, "American Freethought," produced by Bradford and Flynn.
